PWDF: Focus on Mental Disabilities

Education Program Update

On October 5, 2016, PWDF hosted a free California continuing legal education (CLE) on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) (Title II) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) (Title XVI) Work Incentive Rules and Overpayments at PWDF’s offices. PWDF Legal Director, Steven Bruce, provided the CLE, which addressed issues that may arise for beneficiaries with psychiatric and/or developmental disabilities when undergoing a work review by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Due to demand, Mr. Bruce provided a second free CLE on this topic October 27, 2016 at the San Francisco Public Library.

On October 21, 2016, PWDF provided a workshop on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) (Title II) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) (Title XVI) Work Incentive Rules and Overpayments for Deaf Counseling Advocacy and Referral Agency (DCARA) staff at the Deaf Community Center in San Leandro, California. Supervisory Attorney Timothy Roscoe Carter provided the workshop.

In reply to a request for information from ABC Nightly News, Steven Bruce, PWDF Legal Director, provided a producer of the show with information about whether the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applies to arrests. This was in the context of a situation in which a woman in a wheelchair was tased by the police for the purpose of arrest. Mr. Bruce also referred the producer to a US Supreme Court case, the briefs for which would explain the various positions and legal issues.

On December 6, 2016, PWDF hosted a free 3 hour public awareness seminar titled “Integration of Adults with Autism into the Whole of Society.” See related article for more information.

On March 21, 2017, PWDF will present a workshop on Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) (Title II) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) (Title XVI) Work Incentive Rules and Overpayments at NAMI San Francisco. PWDF staff will facilitate the workshop on issues that may arise for beneficiaries with psychiatric and/or developmental disabilities when undergoing a work review by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Who We Are

People With Disabilities Foundation is an operating 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in San Francisco, California, which focuses on the rights of the mentally and developmentally disabled.

Services

Advocacy: PWDF advocates for Social Security claimant’s disability benefits in eight Bay Area counties. We also provide services in disability rights, on issues regarding returning to work, and in ADA consultations, including areas of employment, health care, and education, among others. There is representation before all levels of federal court and Administrative Law Judges. No one is declined due to their inability to pay, and we offer a sliding scale for attorney’s fees.

Education/Public Awareness: To help eliminate the stigma against people with mental disabilities in society, PWDF’s educational program organizes workshops and public seminars, provides guest speakers with backgrounds in mental health, and produces educational materials such as videos.

Continuing Education Provider: State Bar of California MCLE, California Board of Behavioral Sciences Continuing Education, and Commission of Rehabilitation Counselor Certification.
